2010 Family Christmas Letter
“Inside the outhouse….spiderwebs dangled in the roof corners, a sack of lime sat on the dirt floor, and there was a scoop to sprinkle it into the hole to keep the flies down. I missed my snazzy mail-order toilet with the shiny white porcelain bowl, the mahogany lid and the nifty pull-chain flush. As I sat down, though, I realized you can get so used to certain luxuries that you start to think they’re necessities, but when you have to forgo them, you come to see that you don’t need them after all. There is a big difference between needing things and wanting things – though a lot of people had trouble telling the two apart.”

Greetings from Snellville! We trust this letter finds you and yours well and in good humor. 2010 has been a year of learning to do more with less, focusing on what really matters to our family and being thankful for God’s generous blessings.
January 12th found the world heart-broken for the people of Haiti after a devastating earthquake hit their tiny country; news footage propelled us to donate money during our own recession, while uttering “but for the grace of God.” In April we said a prayer for those along the Gulf Coast whose livelihood was affected by the BP Oil disaster. Watching sea animals and land beings suffer, served as a reminder of our role as caretakers of God’s creation. Eight months later the clean-up seems to be nearing an end and folks will fish again in the Gulf, but the economic and environmental effects will be endured for years.
Witt turned three in March; a Thomas the Tank Engine cake was the centerpiece of his celebration. Over Spring Break Tammy and Witt joined our dear neighbors in Gulf Shores AL, while Marc helped care for our brother-in-law in Colorado post bone marrow transplant. The GlaserTrio sought relief during the dog days of summer at the park pool; Witt had a ball sliding and splashing.
In August we returned to work. Tammy spent the last two days of the month plus the first week of September hospitalized; a gallbladder gone-bad brought our family to a screeching halt. Poppy and Mimi took care of Witt, while the good folks at St. Joseph’s pampered Tammy. In September Marc turned 46 and Tammy hit 40 – just happy to be here! (It would be October 18th before the gallbladder could be removed due to abdominal infection. After twelve weeks of medical leave, Tammy returned to school November 29th for the final three weeks of fall semester.)
October found us cheering for the Chilean miners; the world watched as each man was lifted to safety after 69 days deep within Mother Earth. Baseball fans were a bit sentimental as Bobby Cox, longtime manager of the Atlanta Braves, retired. San Francisco and Texas showed America what can be done when misfits, outcasts and orphans work as a team. While the Giants beat the Rangers, there were no real losers in this year’s Fall Classic; grown men participated in a game, whose only requirements are a ball, a stick and a place to call home -- both teams did more with less!
Ilene turned seven in November; she is such a love and beginning to show her age.
In June Grandma died; she was a strong and stubborn Southern woman. Friends kindly gathered over 4th of July weekend to remember Nancy Davis with us. Nannie passed on December 5th; she was mild-mannered, thoughtful and kind. On a blistery cold Wednesday, escorted by her grandsons, Mary Jackson was laid to rest. On both occasions, our family was surrounded by loving folks of all ages who cherished the matriarchs of our family. Remembering together is a gift from God; it allows us to ease into the grieving process with a smile, realizing the impact of a single life.
Witt continues to amaze us; he has a grand sense of humor and asks constantly, “What does that word spell?” He is now in pre-school choir and loves to practice singing; his repertoire is wide – from “Bridge over Troubled Water” to “Rudolph.” In October our family attended “Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE”; it was Witt’s first trip to the Fox Theatre.
Glaser Annual Review: Our family gives four paws up to the following television shows: Big Bang Theory, Leverage, The Closer, The Glades, The Good Guys and The Mentalist. The final episode of NBC’s original Law & Order was a tear-jerker in May. Thank God for re-runs! Witt is a huge fan of Thomas & Friends and Dino Dan. Tammy’s favorite books this year were Olive Kitteridge and Half Broke Horses.
From our hearts to yours -- peace, kindness (given & received) and laughter in 2011!

Earlier this month I received an email from Borders.com offering a $15 coupon for each purchase December 4-5 to use on a DonorsChoose.org classroom project; I had never heard of the site, but visited and opened my own account!
Three weeks later I'm happy to report that money has been donated to my class project! (I'm so dadgum tickled that two more projects are waiting in the wings!) Since I'm not on facebook, I am putting this site into cyberspace via the family blog!!
If you know of anyone looking to make an investment (or tax deductible donation) in a public high school classroom, please have them visit my website. Thanks much! ~tglaser
